father and son walking together

I remember discussing “Berenstain Bear” books with one of my colleagues many years ago. She was the first one to point out to me that the authors portray Papa Bear in a negative light. Only Mama Bear knows any of the right answers, how to raise kids, and how to keep her cool. “Papa Bear”, she said, “is portrayed as a bumbling idiot…”

I had never thought about that before, but when I read the books to my kids, (my kids loved them!) I started to notice what she was talking about.

We all make jokes about men and Dads; it seems to be a pervasive theme when women get together. But maybe this Father’s Day we need to notice what we are saying. It might be the perfect time to rethink the way we talk to and about the men in our lives.

Dads are important. Kids who grow up with involved fathers are more likely to succeed at school and have fewer behavioral issues. Overall they are emotionally healthier. Our kids need their Dads to help them grow, they are an integral part of their lives. Men need to be shown respect, kindness, and consideration for all that they do.

Still not convinced? This video was floating around Facebook. I love it. It really shows how important Dads are to our kids.

Happy Father’s Day to all those amazing Dads out there! You deserve it!
