How To Help Your Kids Help You Around The House

Passover is 6 weeks away! Yikes! I decided that today I was going to start my Passover cleaning, aka, Spring cleaning.

As I have mentioned before, I have been putting in a lot more hours at work, so I know that I will need my kids to help out lots more. I was thinking about telling them:

“That is it, you are helping me clean, no ifs, ands or buts.”

I was going to assign tasks to each of  them:

“You are going to clean the toys in the basement!”

“You are going to organize our DVD’S/videos!”

“You are going to clean your room once and for all!”

In this little dream of mine, everyone was going to step to it! They actually had military uniforms on and they were totally obedient and ready to do my bidding.

Once I woke up from this fantasy of mine, I realized that telling my kids what they were going to do was not going to work. I have one particular child who does not respond well to these type of directives at all.

Instead I envisioned myself saying over dinner, something like this:

“Guys, I am going to need extra help this year to clean for Passover. You have worked her in the past and I know you can do it again. I am going to make a list of what needs to be done and I would love to know when you are available to do it.

Right now, I need someone to:

1.Help organize our DVD/videos

2. Sort through the toys in the basement

3. Organize the  toys in the family room.

4. Help me carry stuff to give away to the car and then drop it off at our local charity.

Who is available for what and when?”

Wish me luck. I will keep you posted on how it goes!
