How To Help Your Kids Help You: The Countdown Continues

3 more weeks to Passover. Am I nervous, anxious, confused? No, not at all. Ok, maybe a little. But I really am one step ahead of the game. Most of the house is cleaned. Remember, Soclof Cleaning Room Day! That was an excellent day and was probably one of the highlights of my life. Did I mention, I really like a clean and organized home? Did I mention, I get excited about weird things?

Let me update you a bit.

1. Eldest son’s room, not cleaned yet. He assures me this Sunday is the big day. Whenever I talk about it with my son, my husband gives me an encouraging look that says, “I know this is hard for you honey, but you need to leave it alone. He will get it done in his own sweet time.”

I send him my own message back, with just a glance, “Okay, but if he doesn’t clean his room will  you yell at him so I don’t have to be the bad guy?”

After almost 18 years of marriage we have the  whole non-verbal thing down pat.

2. This past Sunday, I pulled a little trick out of my sleeve. I  call  it the retroactive apology. It sounds like this:

“There is going to be lots going on in the next few weeks before. I might yell and get uptight.  I am going to apologize now for anything that I do or say that could be misconstrued as hurtful. I will really try to be on my best behavior. If I slip up, again, I am sorry!”

One of my kids said, “Don’t worry Mommy, we understand.” The others just kind of smiled and looked at me funny, but I think they got the picture.

Wish me luck. We are headed for the home stretch!
