“My son is great at math, but he has such problems in language arts”
“My child thinks he is stupid. He hates school. But you should see the way he cares for our pets.”
“My daughter reads about and hour everyday but she can’t even figure out basic science facts.”
Here is something all parents should know and take to heart. Each child’s mind is unique. Every kid has their own individual way that they learn best. Some students are strong in certain areas and some are strong in others. However, no child will excel in all subjects.
More and more, scientists are discovering how the brain works. They are shedding light on specific educational needs of each child. According to Dr. Mel Levine, author of “A Mind At A Time”, there is no such thing as a child who is dumb or lazy. He contends that each child can be reached and can be taught to learn. Children exhibit a lack of motivation and poor grades because their learning strengths are misunderstood. Schools, teachers and parents, need to have a basic understanding of the new research on neurodevelopmental function. There are children struggling because adults are not aware of the particular way their brain works when it is trying to learn.
I never fully understood this concept until I watched this video, Animal school.
I highly recommend this short movie to anyone who has a child struggling with learning problems and even those who are not. Grab a tissue, take a seat and have your perception of your child changed.
Please share this with all your friends, your kids teachers and administrators.
