Do you ever have the feeling that your kids are in control and you are just following their directions?
The Positive Discipline approach helps parents learn skills so that they can feel in charge and not the other way around.
According to the Positive Discipline philosophy:
“Parents should be the ones setting limits for their young children and involve older children in helping to set limits. Your job (the parents) is to set the parameters, like the sides of a bridge. When your children are younger, the limits are tighter. As the children get older, the limits expand and children can be involved in setting those limits.”
Young kids want their parents to be in control. It makes them feel safe. They will fight, argue and sulk about the limits you may set. It may seem that they want to be left alone to do their own thing, but deep down they want you to be in charge.
Older kids want to have a voice in making rules and parents can guide them to do that. They also want a parent who they can depend on. Once the rules have been decide on, they want their parents to stand behind their rules and enforce the limits.
It seems counterintuitive but all this talk about rules can lead to more joy in our homes. Kids feel more secure and parents feel like they are better able to manage the ups and downs of parenting. Kids perform better all around when they know they are accountable for their actions and their parents are firm about house rules.
So how can we do this? How can we learn to set limits and rules to make our houses calmer, more relaxed and ultimately happier?
