Social Skills Group For Kids: Meeting And Making Friends

I just had my first planning meeting with Courtney Evenchik a Who’s The Boss parenting coach. Starting Tuesday, October 8th, Courtney and I will be running a Social Skills group for girls in Jewish Day Schools.
Courtney(among her many other jobs) works as a School Psychologist at Mosdos Ohr Hatorah Girls School, here in Cleveland, Ohio. I always loved to hear about her impromptu and planned social skills classes that she ran at her school. Her classes involved teaching girls how to handle minor and major teasing, sharing, understanding body language and bullying.

I was very excited when Courtney invited me to co-teach a Social Skills class sponsored by Bellefaire Jewish Children’s Bureau.

In our meeting today, we discussed our plans for our first class. The topic, Meeting and Making Friends. To many of us, meeting and making friends comes naturally, but for some kids it does not. They need a bit of help.
In this class we are going to break down some of the skills needed in creating friendships so that children can understand the nuances involved in social interactions. We will cover some of the following:

1. Joining in a game

a. How do I ask to join?
b. When is a good time for me to ask to join ?
c. Making eye contact
d. What do I do if the other children say “no”?

2. Sharing:

a. How do I share with my friends?
b. What do I say?
c. When do I say it?
d. Let’s say I want to share my snack to I have to give all my snack or just one piece?
e. What if I don’t want to share? How do I say “no” kindly?

Want your child to join?
