The 5 Languages Of Love Book Club: Do We Always Need To Give Gifts To Our Kids?

book club

We had a great book club meeting last night. We discussed the book, The Five Love Languages of Children by Gary Chapman.

We discussed The Five Love Languages:

1. Words of Affirmation
2. Quality Time
3. Physical Touch
4. Receiving Gifts
5. Acts of Service

Everyone had enjoyed the book. Most of us felt that the book gave us tools to enhance and deepen our connections with our children, spouses and even our friends.

Many of us were still trying to determine the different love languages of our family members. We discussed that it might take a while to figure it out. The idea is to have fun, experiment and play with this new information and not drive ourselves crazy.

One participant felt that most of the parenting advice that she had gotten over the years highlighted spending time with your kids; that was the best way to help kids feel loved. The philosophy in our book, The Five Love Languages of Children, overturned that notion.

Not only that, modern parents  are advised to stop giving  so many gifts, because kids have so much stuff. So the love language of “Receiving gifts”, seemed counterintuitive. Modern parents are also told that they do too much for their kids and need to let their children do for themselves. This sparked a lively debate when we spoke about Acts of Service. How do we fill the love tanks of those kids, whose love languages are Acts of Service without being a helicopter parent?

We also discussed what are our own love languages and how hard it was to speak in a different love language. This was important for me because during the discussion, I realized that 2 of my children’s love languages are receiving gifts. I think I had been in denial because I am not fluent in that love language. Everyone had some great suggestions that I hope will help me speak that language to my children in the future.

Our next Book Club is coming up soon! Tuesday, May 12, 2015, 8-9pm.
