A+ Solutions, and the Mandel JCC Early Childhood Center are hosting an evening with Aliza Feldman, OTR
Her topic:
Understanding Sensory Processing In Young Children
This is such an important program. There are many times when a child is misbehaving and we are not sure why. Many times it can be due to sensory processing issues. Knowing about Sensory Processing, helps us parent in better, more creative ways.
I wanted you all to get to know Aliza before our talk in a few weeks, Tuesday, January 13th at 7:30pm at the Mandel JCC, so I interviewed her. You will love what she has to say:
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I was born and raised in NYC. I love Cleveland and I still can’t believe how genuinely nice and friendly people are here. I am a graduate from Touro College where I received my masters in occupational therapy. I initially started my career working with adults but quickly realized how much I missed working with kids. I have been working with kids ever since.
What is the most important thing parents should know about their child’s Sensory Processing Development?
If a parent has a better understanding of what sensory processing is they can have a better understanding of their child and what their child needs. Sometimes we think children are being wild, difficult, or super sensitive. We feel as if they get upset about trivial matters. In actuality, their behavior can be a result of sensory processing issues. My upcoming presentation will be filled with practical information on how parents can help children deal with their sensory issues.
When should a parent start to worry about their child’s sensory processing development?
A parent should start to worry when many aspects of daily living are compromised.
Children who can’t get dressed in the morning, or are unable to eat a somewhat varied diet or who have issues going to school are candidates for an OT evaluation.
What do you love most about being an Occupational therapist?
I love seeing how much my clients have grown and how much their quality of life has improved due to OT interventions.
Being a Occupational therapist puts you in the position of helping parents all the time. What encouragement can you give parents?
There are a multitude of approaches and options available for parents to help their child develop. However, there is no magic bullet; the combination of approaches and options may be as unique as the child. Parents know their children best and are able to keep their child’s best interest in mind.
Thank you so much Aliza Feldman, A+ Solution’s talented Occupational Therapist!
