How to Promote Positive Social Skills in Your Child with Learning Differences

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am researching the topic of Social Skills for struggling students. I am reading the following book:

I am learning that learning disabilities affects children in all areas of their lives. It is not just an academic problem. If a child has difficulties following directions in his math class, he might also have problems following directions in his drama club, and at home when his parents ask him to finish his chores. It will also affect the way he interacts with his peers.

Richard Lavoie gives the following analogy:

Every major metropolitan area has a discount furniture outlet whose advertising trumpets the fact that it sells, “living room sets” that include a couch , loveseat, recliner, two end tables, two lamps and a coffee table. These stores, as a matter of policy , will not sell you a single piece of furniture-you’ve got to buy the entire set!”

So it is with a child’s learning disorder. You must come to accept the fact that the learning problems will likely impact all areas of the child’s development-academic, social, and emotional. It is unfair to accept some of these difficulties while refusing to tolerate others. I recall a dad saying to me,’I understand that Darren can’t read very well, but I will not tolerate the fact that he interrupts me when I am trying got talk on the phone.’ Sorry, Dad! The neurological problems that cause Darren’s reading problems also cause his poor impulse control. You need to understand all of the manifestations of learning disorder. You have to buy-and live with-the whole living room set.”

I am really looking forward to Courtney’s talk where she will shed light on how to help our children manage their learning disabilities as it relates to their social skills.
